Can Dental Implants Cause Gum Disease?

Peri-Implant Disease
When you develop periodontal disease around a dental implant, it is known as peri-implant disease. This known complication can occur with dental implants where the tissue around the implant becomes inflamed, adversely impacting the gum tissue. Much like regular gum disease, which occurs around natural teeth, peri-implant disease results from a build-up of harmful bacteria around the dental implant’s tooth prosthetic, typically a dental crown. When left undiagnosed and untreated, the hard and soft tissue around the implant can become damaged, impairing the longevity, function, and aesthetic of the implant.

Two Forms of Implant Gum Disease
Gum disease, which impacts a dental implant, can be split into two forms:
- Peri-implant mucositis: Only the soft tissue around the implant suffers from inflammation. There is no risk of bone loss, but if the soft tissue remains inflamed and untreated, it can progress to peri-implantitis
- Peri-implantitis: When peri-implant mucositis is left untreated, extensive inflammation around the dental implant will begin to destroy not only the soft tissues but also the hard tissues around the dental implant. This includes the supporting bone structure that is holding the implant in place. If this stage is reached, oral surgery will likely be recommended
